What this site is

46 calculators for the jobs homeowners take on themselves — spreading mulch, pouring a slab, laying a patio, topping up soil. Each one takes measurements you can get with a tape measure and returns the quantities a supplier will actually sell you: cubic yards, tons, bags, sheets, boards.

Everything runs in your browser. There is no account, no app, and nothing to install. Your measurements are never sent anywhere — the arithmetic happens on your device.

Why the assumptions are on every page

Most material calculators are black boxes. You put in a number, a different number comes out, and you have no way to tell whether it used 800 pounds per cubic yard for mulch or 1,400. Those two answers differ by nearly a ton on a mid-sized bed.

So every calculator here lists the density, coverage rate or bag yield it used, and the depth conventions behind its defaults. If your supplier quotes a different figure, you will be able to see exactly which input to change. How we calculate covers the method in more detail.

How this site is funded

The calculators are free and always will be. The site is paid for by display advertising, affiliate links to retailers, and referral fees when someone chooses to request quotes from a contractor.

Affiliate and sponsored links are labelled as such. They do not change what the calculators tell you — a commission has never moved a number on this site, and the day it does is the day the site stops being worth visiting.

Corrections

If a figure looks wrong, it might be. Densities and coverage rates vary by region and supplier, and mistakes happen. Send the calculator name and the figure you would expect via the contact page and it will be checked.
